Israel Seeks to Provide Police Forces with Impunity in East Jerusalem

Israeli public security minister Gilad Erdan is working on advancing an amendment that would give Israeli police forces operating in east Jerusalem immunity from Palestinian lawsuits for damages they cause during campaigns or measures against Jerusalemite citizens.

Under current law, soldiers from the army and border police are protected from damage or injury suits filed by Palestinians in the West Bank, according to Haaretz newspaper.

The current law also grants protection to army soldiers acting in areas within the Green Line and Occupied Jerusalem, but not to police members who can be sued by east Jerusalem Arabs for damages or injuries caused during raids on homes or confrontations with local residents.

Erdan’s amendment is aimed at providing legal protection to all activities by the police and border police within the Green Line and making them also immune from lawsuits filed by east Jerusalem residents.
